: Speaking of Marines, we had a retread sailor who was about 30 years old on the Lowe and he was always on the edge of being in serious trouble. He was a wise guy, know it all and for that he was not not like by the NCOs and was just trolling to be smashed. So one morning in the Fall of 1962 I was on watch when three Marines came up the gang plank. Two were wearing duty belts and brassards and one had a shiner. So the story was some sailor got into the Marine barracks, woke a guy up and when he was trying to sit up the sailor slugged him and hauled butt. The OD listened and then told the Marines, "There's what, Five or six ships tied up here, what makes you think your puncher is on this ship"? The slugged Marine snapped to attention and said, "Sir, well sir he was wearing the same patch as this guy", and pointed to USS Lowe on the PO of the Watch's right shoulder. The PO of the Watch had stood the mid and was standing the second dog, so he told me to take them up to First Division when Quarters was called, because, "they want to talk to Mason". Mason left the ship in cuffs with those Marines, because no one cared what happened to him. They got him to tell them the truth and they brought him back to the ship and when he stood Mast, the old man gave him 30 days in the brig. No, he was the same when he came back and maybe two months later he got thrown out for faking a medical emergency in a force four storm up North somewhere. The Old Man went through it to save time and the ship was so damaged we were at Hunters Point 10 days. And of course a chopper came out to pick him up as soon as they could fly. OH, I had my problems with USMC guarding the gates but it was all honest fun.

Amazing. I was a Brig Guard in 1962, housed on the second floor of that building, when the attack occured on another floor. We were all out looking for whoever did it. A very good thing we did not find him. WOW! That was a long time ago.
