Hi All I was station on Treasure Island from 1970-71 going to Electronic School and then I
got lucky to get shore station at Treasure Island from 71-74. My luck for being station on
Treasure Island was that when I finished ETA school I got orders to go to a PT boat in
Vietnam and I was scared shit cause more than likely I was going to be shot anyway one of
my classmate Espnoisa had gotten duty on Treasure Island and he was complaining that he
hated this place so I told him I would exchange duty with him if he wanted and we did.
So life on Treasure Island was great, and the schools where great, I went to RADAR school
and also some part of Commutations school learning how to aline the IF strip of a 1051
radio. The food at the chow hall was good and the clubs were great. Also going into the
city was also great you either had a choice of going to Oakland or San Francisco.
There where a lot of great new friends that I met both in the Navy and people that lived on
the island. I had a girl friend that lived on the island and her name was Paula Smith and
she had a sister Donna Smith and brother Mark Smith. Her dad taught at the Firer fighting
school and DC control at the Butter cup. Met a lot of the kids at the Commissary that had a
dinner type place where you could play pin ball and there was always a really DICK
government police guy in there giving the kids a hard time for being under age playing the
pin ball machine. Most of the kids went to Galileo High School in the city of SF. Some of the
other kids on the island that I met was FISH "always spaced out on speed", there was a hot
Filipino chick that was friends with Paula Smith, a girl that worked at the gas station on TI
and her boy friend was building a Harley chopper, Marry Dobbs and her brother and a lot
more kids that I can't remember their names and most moved down to San Diego.
I built my 1966 VW Baja bug on Treasure Island since they had a nice working garage for
the Navy guys.
Schools Command duty station was nice since it was like a real job except you stood duty
and such. My duty officer was Mr Caton for awhile and then later a warrant officer and his
name slips my mine but he did have a very nice S90 porsche.
I also had a side job on Treasure Island cleaning out the laundry rooms, it was a little extra
cash in the pocket.
I also had house sat for a few officers who lived off base and it was nice to get away from
the barracks.
I had a lot of memories and stories and would like to write a book about my experience
about my life on Treasure Island since to me is was a culture shock coming from a little
town in Hilo, Hawaii.
I also started my bodybuilding at treasure island and later on in life won Mr San Jose
middle weight and Mr Santa Cruz middle weight and Mr Western regional amateur
bodybuilding in the early 1980 time frame.
If anyone remembers me you can contact me via my email address CiscoJ@aol.com would
like to catch up on old memories and such. I now live in San Jose Calif and retired from a
government contractor after 36 years working from them and I'm divorced and have one
21 step-daughter.
Aloha all my Ex-Treasure Island friends and Navy buddies
