Jerry,
We must have been there at the same time. I was in ETA school when the SPS-29C took out all of the flash bulbs and fluorescent lamps! I also remember how nice the new barracks were, and standing watch over the "green" light bulb. I was third generation Navy and my Dad told me to try for job as mail runner, which I got. No marching! Also remember when Zumwalt was made CNO and ordered $.25 beer in the soda machines. Spent many nights in the base bowling alley trying to empty those machines.
After I graduated I was made an AMAA over the Vietnamese barracks for a couple of months until my ship was ready (USNS Harkness T-AGS-32). Somebody decided to put the Vietnamese students next to the barracks for US Marines returning from Nam for transition to civilian life. Made for some interesting nights!
After I got out in 75 the Navy was nice enough to pay part of my way through college where I got a EE degree. I'll always remember the late night bull sessions and pinochle games in the barracks.
Thanks for the memories!
