: :Well, I just learned that the band I stood across from in formation for Saturday muster
was an ET school band, not a Navy Musicians band. But they were good and fooled me.
I was on TI from October 1955 through end of December, waiting for ET school, TAD as
chaplain's driver. (When I was in the line of new arrivals waiting for temp assignment
each person ahead of me got mess cook--mess cook--mess cook--and I stepped up to
the desk and was asked if I had a driver's license and could type. Yes to both, and I was
assigned to the Chaplain's office there across from the station entry and chapel. Cushy
job, driving into San Francisco and occasionally typing during times like when the
disbursing officer on the USS Bon Homme Richard ran off with the cash and we made
out emergency loans to families.) I heard that band once too many times and asked the
leader for an audition. Was sent back to Washington DC to music school. The Chaplain,
a Commander, was being transferred to Hawaii and asked me if I wanted to go along with
him as yeoman--but I turned him down. It was OK though because this way I met my
wife and have been a professional musician to this day, still playing.
