I'm looking through AC Transit's archives that include a many photographs of the Key System from the 1940s. There are many photos of the "elephant train" which was actually powered by rubber tires and was used to transport children to activities at a fair on Treasure Island. The photos are labled on the back "crippled children's tour", but there is no date. One would assume that this was the fair of 1939, but I wondered if anyone could confirm this. Transbay train service was inaugurated Jan 14, 1939 and ferry service was still running. Most of the pictures are of the children enjoying various kinds of entertainment like glass blowers, cowboys doing riding stunts, chinese dancers, acrobats, circus animals, rodeo. One of the photos has a sign "children's village".
Thanks for any info you may have.
