U.S.S. Carpenter DD-825

The USS Carpenter DD-825 from 1972 - 1975. TI was great place.
I enjoyed telling other sailors in WESPAC that mt ship was home ported at Treasure Island. Because it was always followed by the question "Where's that??"

TI is right in the middle of the coolest place in the U.S. [Both literally and figuratively :-)] But, being stationed on board a ship at TI was extra special! It was the best of both worlds.

I remember driving that long, winding road up YBI off the base. If you recall there was a low retaining wall on the outboard side of the road. You might also recall that seagulls used to like to sit on that wall which was about "car window" height. Well, one day my buddy got the idea to take a broom with us in our car up that road about as fast as we dared. Then, when we got to the gulls, he was going to stick the broom out the car window and see how many he could get. Well, apparently seagulls are a lot heavier and more massive than they look! That broom exploded when it hit the first bird!! Nothing but feathers, wood and straw flying everywhere and my buddy with a nearly broken arm. I laughed till I cried! (Apparently our XO was right when he once suggested we all had too much time on our hands.)

I also remember lining up for gas at the base gas station at 4 in the morning during the Arab Oil Embargo.

I remember finding, in the rafters of an old building, an orange jumpsuit and an ID badge from somebody who had escaped from the TI brig. I turned it over to the Marine gaurd at the front gate. His response - "Hey corporal, here's another one." I thought, "another one? How often does this happen?"

I barely remember stumbling back to ship after spending many an evening at the EM club, "The Islander" and trying to get lucky with a waitress nicknamed "Patches"

TI Love it or Leave it.

Ya gotta love it.
