Treasure Island (1965-92)

I was fortunate to have spent a lot of time on Treasure Island (TI) over the span of my naval career. As a midshipman at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1965-69 TI was the administrative support for such events as annual physicals, uniform supplies, ship visits for orientation and the like. I next saw TI after three years of sea duty when I was assigned as the Protocol and Foreign Liaison Officer for the 12th Naval District (1972-74.) That was certainly an interesting duty. I was there when the museum was created. I left active duty in 1974 and attended law school in SF and drilled with various reserve units, including Naval Base SF, IIS 120. This unit provided direct support to the HQ staff of the naval station which had assumed many new responsibilities after the 12 Naval District was disestablished. I was directly involved in the re-establishment of "Fleet Week", which eventually became one of the reserve unit's primary areas of responsibility. As a reserve officer I often stood watch as the CDO for the naval station until I retired from the reserves in 1991. I threw my "getting out of the navy" party in 1974, my "graduation from law school" party in 1977 and my informal wedding reception in 1979 at the Tower Club on YBI. Treasure Island plays a very significant role in the movie of my life!
