I was a Radioman working in the message center in Building 1 from 1970-1973. It was always a thrill to walk out of the building after a watch and see the San Francisco skyline. The views from T.I. were priceless.
There was a blind man named Red who had a small snack stand inside Building 1. He was a lifesaver when we got hungry during the day watch and didn't have time to go out for lunch.
I remember watching the USS Enterprise sail through the bay on its way to Alameda.
Being stationed at Treasure Island was the best duty a sailor or WAVE could ask for.
Just got back from a trip to San Francisco. My family and I visited T.I. Some things had changed and yet some things were exactly as I remembered them. The old WAVE barracks were gone, but Building one looks the same from the outside. I understand they are going to make it into a ferry terminal. Also, they plan to build office buildings and more housing. Maybe, ten years from now, I will go back and see the changes.
