: Served at Treasure Island from 5/30/51 to 9/22/52
: Treasure Island was my first duty station out of boot camp (San
Diego). I was assigned as a mess cook in the Receiving Station mess
hall, feeding hundreds of transient Navy and Marine personnel as well
as the ship's company every day. After four months I was assigned to
the Transfer Section of the Receiving Station where I worked the
Speed-Ball Desk for the next 12 months, after which, I was accepted
for Submarine School at New London, Conn. This was one of the
highlights of my 20 year Navy careed. Even though the Commanding
Officer boasted that he was the measnest SOB in the Navy, carrying out
that boast daily, it was still a wonderful tour.
: p.s. I came back to the Bay Area for a four year tour at the Naval
Recruiting Station located at the Federal Building on the corner of
Levenworth and Grove Streets, San Francisco.
